Celebrating 30 Years of Empowering Women and Transforming Communities
For three decades, Karamoja Women Umbrella Organisation (KAWUO) has stood as a beacon of hope, resilience, leadership, and transformation for women and communities across the Karamoja sub-region.
Since its establishment, KAWUO has remained committed to promoting women’s participation in development through advocacy, socio-economic empowerment, leadership development, civic engagement, and community mobilization. What began as a vision to amplify the voices of women in Karamoja has grown into a powerful movement that continues to transform lives and strengthen communities.
Over the past 30 years, KAWUO has walked hand in hand with women, youth, local leaders, civil society organizations, and development partners to address challenges affecting marginalized communities including poverty, gender inequality, harmful cultural practices, gender-based violence, limited access to education, and economic exclusion.
Today, KAWUO proudly celebrates:
- Thousands of women and girls empowered
- Hundreds of women groups mobilized and strengthened
- Expanded advocacy for women’s rights and gender equality
- Strong community partnerships across Karamoja
- Increased participation of women in leadership and governance
- Improved livelihoods and community resilience
As we commemorate this important milestone, we recognize the tireless efforts of our founders, staff, partners, donors, community leaders, and the resilient women of Karamoja whose courage and determination continue to inspire change.
Our journey has not only been about programs and projects — it has been about restoring dignity, creating opportunities, strengthening voices, and building a future where women and girls can fully participate in shaping their communities.
While we celebrate the achievements of the past 30 years, we also look forward with renewed commitment and determination. KAWUO remains dedicated to strengthening women’s leadership, promoting social justice, advancing economic empowerment, and building sustainable communities for future generations.
Together, we continue to believe that empowered women build stronger families, stronger communities, and a stronger Karamoja.
